This year, our staff began the process of mapping out our writing curriculum. One of the collective decisions was for our elementary students to begin the process of learning how to keyboard. So far so good. Looking at the students learn proper hand placement and posture , I remember my first steps on learning to play the piano. It is about process and ongoing practice between projects. Flashbacks of drills came back to me. The digital natives are working at it.

Today is the first day of classes. New third graders meet me for the first time as a technologist. There I am, surveying my new students on their access to technology at home and cluing them in to the new Chicago Public Schools Acceptable Use Policy. A good day overall. About 40 percent of the students in this third grade class have access to a computer at home. Thanks to Maestro Orlando for taking this photo.

Yesterday, I was working with the new Screenr screen capture web application. I like it because it is simple and fairly easy. Oh, it is free. Click on the link to see my first screenr. I learned to use the pause button so as not to rush myself. I also had to play with the resize option to get it just right as I went through the log in procedure. Will do another one today.

Last Friday, as the programmers for Edmodo were updating their great education centered service Edmodo, they streamed live from one of their backyards and anwered questions from the public. We used Edmodo in our middle school as a way for students groups to share resources to build a presentation on the African Neur Tribe. We look forward to using the newest version this Fall.

From Edmodo Blog site.

Realtime updates – Edmodo time-line auto-refreshes

Threaded replies, replies are now underneath each post instead of sent to the top of the timeline and treated like a new post.

New caching system – Speed when clicking items is now super fast

Archive feature – ability for teachers to archive their groups forever.

Inline editing of posts and replies -we don’t send you to a separate page to edit your posts and replies now.

Spotlight feature – when someone replies to one of your posts, when you post an assignment or when a student turns in an assignment they get highlighted in the spotlight area. This should be the first thing you check when you login to Edmodo from now on.

See all posts by user by clicking their picture or name.
